We’re in Pristina! / Olemme perillä!

We woke up early on Saturday morning to catch our plane. Thank goodness we spent the night at the airport hotel so we got at least a few hours of sleep.

A Macedonian gentleman kept Mikael company during the flight. Sini was sleepy and dozing off every now and then. The flight took about three hours. Lovely mountains covered with snow emerged from the clouds when we started descending. So cool! We arrived at Pristina airport about 8:30 local time. 

We had two taxi drivers awaiting us at the airport. Two Finnish colleagues joined us and we headed straight to work. There, we were warmly welcomed by our Finnish and Kosovan colleagues and got to know the building and the customs of the school. After the day at work we took a taxi to our new home in Dragodan area. We live in the same building with some of our colleagues. A cheerful gentleman was waiting for us with the keys when we arrived.

We were expecting a little flat with basic necessities. We were surprised how big and well-equiped our apartment is. Some of the furniture isn't the kind we would have chosen ourselves but we will surely enjoy this home for the next six months! There's a ceramic stove, a microwave oven, a couch, a TV, a washing machine, a dishwasher, linen and a lot of room. What we've heard so far, there are quire a lot of apartments available in Pristina if we'd like to look for something else. But for now, this apartment seems to be quite nice.

We got our local mobile phone numbers the same day from Ipko and ordered a broadband and TV service to our new home. During this trip we also got to know our closest streets a bit. After a long day we decided to get chicken burgers from a fast food place near to us even though Sini's a vegetarian. This time hunger won her principals. At the fast food place, there was a sign on the wall with a smiling burger that said "Fuck your diet". Yes, burgers are not good for your health but they sure were delicious and very cheap from a Finnish perspective: a chicken burger costs 1 euro, a chicken burger with egg 1,50 euros.

We worked on Sunday too. After work we headed to Albi Mall to shop some basic things for our home. Albi Mall seemed to have anything you'd ever like to buy. There were also some familiar stores e.g. Jysk and Triumph. In addition, there was a Ted Baker store where we must go shopping next weekend. When we got home, we still went to the grocery store nearby and bought some vegetables to balance our diet a bit with a fresh salad. Mikael also bought a grilled chicken from a place that grills them outside the restaurant.

Today we had a day off. The Orthodox Christmas is a national holiday in Kosovo even though it's celebrated mostly among the Serbian minority. The banks were closed and it was really quiet in the city when we went for a walk. Still, most of the stores were open. Even the broadband we orded on Saturday was connected today (fast delivery!). In the evening we had a little party with our new colleagues. It was nice to get to know them in a more informal setting!

Our most important observation so far is that Kosovars are amazing – polite, hospitable and friendly.

Lauantaiaamuna heräsimme aikaisin, jotta ehdimme lähtöselvitykseen. Oli hyvä, että vietettiin yö lentokenttähotellissa. 

Norwegianin suora lento Pristinaan kesti noin kolme tuntia: olimme perillä noin klo 8.30 paikallista aikaa. Makedonialainen herrasmies jututti Mikaelia, Sini katseli maisemia ja torkahteli. 

Kentällä meitä oli vastassa kaksi taksikuskia. Kanssamme taksiin tuli kaksi suomalaista kollegaa, joiden kanssa suunnattiin suoraan työpaikalle. Paikan päällä uudet suomalaiset ja kosovolaiset kollegat ottivat meidät lämpimästi vastaan. Tutustuimme tiloihin ja talon tapoihin. Työpäivän jälkeen ahtauduimme matkatavaroinemme taksiin ja ajelimme uuteen kotiimme Dragodan-alueella. Samassa rakennuksessa kanssamme asuu muutama suomalainen kollega. Meitä oli jo vastassa iloinen herra asunnon avainten kanssa.

Olimme odottaneet pientä luukkua, jossa mahdumme oleskelemaan ja josta on peruskalusteet. Olimme yllättyneitä asunnon koosta ja varustelun tasosta. Sisustuselementit eivät toki välttämättä ole sellaisia, joita itse valitsisimme, mutta varmasti tässä puoli vuotta asustaa oikein mukavasti! On keraaminen liesi, mikro, sohva, telkkari, pesukone, astianpesukone, petivaatteet ja tilaa runsaasti. Kuulemamme mukaan asuntoja on myös aika hyvin ja edullisesti saatavilla Pristinasta, mikäli haluaisimme vielä vaihtaa. 

Haettiin vielä samana päivänä paikalliselta operaattorilta Ipkolta prepaid-puhelinliittymät ja tilattiin nettiyhteys uuteen kotiimme. Samalla tutustuttiin lähimpiin katuihin koidn ympäristössä. Iltapalaksi haettiin valtavat kanahampurilaiset lähimmästä hampurilaispaikasta, jonka seinää koristi muun muassa taulu, jossa oli iloisesti hymyilevä kerroshampurilainen ja ”Fuck your diet” -teksti. Tavallinen kanahamppari maksoi euron, kananmunalla varustettu puolitoista euroa ja hampurilaisen koko oli euron juustoon verrattuna varmaan viisinkertainen. Sini ei tavallisesti syö lihaa, mutta väsymys ja nälkä saivat joustamaan periaatteista. On myönnettävä, että hamppari maistui oikein hyvin kanasta huolimatta.

Myös sunnuntai oli työpäivä, joskin melko lyhyt sellainen. Töiden jälkeen suunnattiin taksilla Albi Mall -kauppakeskukseen, jossa tuntui olevan kaikki mahdollinen, mitä ihminen voi ikinä haluta ostaa. Tuttujakin liikkeitä oli, kuten Jysk ja Triumph muutamia mainitakseni. Lisäksi kauppakeskuksesta löytyi Ted Bakerin myymälä, jonne on tehtävä ekskursio ensi viikonloppuna. Ostettiin kodin perustarpeita kuten pesuaineita. Kotiin päästyämme kävimme vielä kotikulmien pikkukaupoissa pyörimässä ja ostimme muun muassa kasviksia salaattia varten. Mikael osti grillatun kanan. 

Tänään on ollut vapaapäivä. On ortodoksien joulu, jota juhlivat täällä lähinnä serbivähemmistöön kuuluvat. Päivä on silti Kosovossa kansallinen juhlapäivä ja esimerkiksi pankit ovat kiinni. Kaupungilla oli hiljaista, mutta suurin osa liikkeistä oli kuitenkin auki, kun kävimme pienellä kävelyllä. Laajakaistakin asennettiin tänään. Näppärät nettipojat laittoivat netin rullaamaan, eikä tarvinnut kyllä itse tehdä yhtään mitään. Kaukosäätimeenkin laitettiin paristot puolestamme. Illaksi oli järjestetty pienet juhlat kollegoiden kesken. Oli mukava tutustua heihin paremmin hieman epävirallisemmassa yhteydessä!

Tähän mennessä tärkein huomiomme Kosovosta: kaikki tapaamamme paikalliset ihmiset ovat olleet aivan mahtavia – kohteliaita, vieraanvaraisia ja ystävällisiä.
